What's the difference between coaching and therapy?A Few Similarities Both coaches and therapists are focused on building trusted relationship with their clients, being driven by the client's needs, improving the quality of life for the client, and adhering to strict ethical standards. A Few Differences Therapy is conducted by a licensed healthcare professional who can diagnose a client's behavior, where as a coach is not a healthcare professional and cannot diagnose a client. Therapists may spend significant time looking into a client's past and helping resolve past traumas, where as a coach is almost entirely focused on the present and future. Additionally, therapists may work with clients who are mentally ill and struggle to cope in life, whereas coaches work with clients who are in stable high functioning condition capable of the change they want. Lastly, therapy may be covered by health insurance, where as coaching is not.
